New Stern Tube/Stuffing Box Shim

The 1913 Danish-built topsail schooner WN Ragland has just left after maintenance to her drivetrain and other work.  Here is the inboard end of her shaft tube, rebedded with a new purpleheart spacer, ready for the stuffing box.

Here is the stuffing box installed.  She also received a new shaft, cutless bearing, prop tuneup, and engine alignment.

The new purpleheart guards look good.  The old ones, in galvanized steel, were rusting and no longer protecting the planking.

 

WN Ragland at Baird Boat Co.

The WN Ragland is a grand old Danish schooner.  During this haulout, Baird Boat Co. has also refastened much of her oak bottom and helped the crew in replumbing and revalving the seawater systems.
